This session was the art of telling a story visually.

How do we tell a story using the tool of the camera?

Notes -

composition is the placement of people and objects in the frame

the aim is to tell your story in the most powerful way possible

composition means communicating ideas using shapes and visual patterns

we're not telling a story were showing them a story, bellow shows the effect that different types of camera lense can have the type of shot used during film

ree

if your shooting with black bars in cinema be careful as you can mess up and cut things off and make an ugly shot by misplacing them. This is something that as a viewer I normally don't think about, but understanding the subtle nuances has helped me to understand a new technique I could apply or factor into my work.

Understanding the aspect ratio, which one do you pick and use? What is it about them that helps you to tell your story as they can make the shots more engaging simply

harness them and adjust them by putting some bars over your screen.

Jurassic park Connor noted that it is best to think about the composition of an image and using the grid to help get a good shot such as the way it is used in Jurrasic park to achieve this shot of the car in the center with parts from but the foreground and background in centre while showing both characters at the same time on both sides.

THINGS I WILL TRY TO DO IN MY NEXT PROJECT I HAVE LEARNED

  • take some shots on my own with the camera to test out the best lense and aspect ratio

  • use the 180-degree rule its not boring but simple

  • where actors are talking you draw a line through called the line of action

  • 3 camera set up means have to film on either side

  • visual pattern recognition humans are creatures that appreciate patterns so try and incorporate them.

  • cinematography is utilising human psychology

From a set design perspective utilising things such as visual patterns being placed into my designs was a concept that seems simple and for most people will go unnoticed however upon learning about this I feel as though the idea of pattern incorporation into my work will open up many new creative choices such as adding in subtle textures to what would have been flat surfaces or creating stylistic patterns such as vertical lines to fill in space on walls while also comforting viewers.

Here is an image I had created from a previous project but you can see the use of the rule of thirds within the composition of the shot I re-created. When reflecting on the information I have learned in this module has given me a greater appreciation for how good the original shot is. And how broadly applicable the film master skills Connel has taught us can be used.
